Checklist
Room finishing checklist
This is for a room that is nearly there but still feels unfinished or cluttered. Work down the list in order, because each layer depends on the one before it. Most steps take 5 to 30 minutes, and none needs tools beyond a tape measure and painter's tape.
Your ticks are saved only in this browser, on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Why this order
Furniture and rug come first because everything else attaches to them: a lamp needs a table, and art needs a wall that is not hidden by a misplaced bookcase. Light comes next because it changes how every color looks. Color and materials follow, then textiles, and last the small objects, which are the first thing to blame and the last thing that should be fixed. This is the order set out in the finishing guide.
The numbers on the list are common design rules of thumb, and the guides linked here explain each. Check the lease before drilling or painting if you rent. Anything involving wiring, a new fixture or a wall anchor into unknown materials is a job for a licensed professional if you are unsure. This is general information, not professional advice.
Where this comes from
The list is built from the guides on this site, which in turn draw on published interior design guidance on walkways, seating distances, rug placement, layered lighting, color repetition and art height. Where numbers appear they are ranges, and the sources we read differ by a few inches.
